Description

From Apartheid to democracy – a media perspective

A public lecture by Piet Van Niekirk, journalist and editor of bSpirit magazine

The last decade of the Apartheid regime in South Africa was characterised not only by violence, but also by strict state control of the media. Yet, after the Berlin Wall came down, opposing parties in South Africa prepared for a changeover to democracy. Working as a political correspondent during this turbulent time, Piet van Niekerk bore witness - and some wounds - to this transition, which can rightly be described as a miracle.
